“Good Morning Mummy” he said
I smiled and hugged him

Still cozy in his bed
The recently turned 7 year old boy licked his shaky tooth
“Ooo..its really loose” I exclaimed
“If it falls when you are in school, remember to wrap it in a tissue and bring it home.”

He did not want to wait
He wanted to make it happen

Twisting and turning the tip of his tongue,
He pushed outward
He pulled inward
He did it again twice…

…and popped!

the little pearl rested on his tongue
as he stretched it out with pride.

Yeah! It fell.
And I was there to witness it all!
*clap clap clap*

=====

11:30pm….

Tooth Fairy flew by
Saw that cute 1-tooth-lesser face snoozing away
Slowly lifted his pillow
Left a golden coin under
and kissed him good night
His eyebrows twitched
but his mind continued to sleep

Recently, a friend asked me, “How did you manage to get your boys to stop drinking from the milk bottle and start drinking milk from the cup?”

Before I share my way of weaning my boys from bottle to cup, I think it is only appropriate to address the topic, “Is it necessary to wean from bottle to cup, in the first place?”

Apart from the frequent mention by pediatricians that the bottle teat or pacifier will affect the appearance and growth of milk teeth, I am more concerned with the reliance on the bottle may turn out to be an addiction.

Can you imagine your child, at 12 years old, studying his or her Primary School Leaving Examination and still sucking from the milk bottle teat every night before sleep and every morning when he or she awakes?

Is that what you want?

Many believe that such things get weaned off naturally.
My question is, “Do They Really wean off naturally WITHOUT the parents or the caretaker’s intervention?”

Unlikely, I think.
Will a child come to the parent one day and say, “I want to stop drinking from the milk bottle. I want to drink milk from the cup.” when the parents have never suggested it?
Quite rare, I believe.

But how many kids get weaned off from the bottle AND STOPPED DRINKING MILK completely as well? Quite common.

Milk is so crucial for bones and memory power.
If you want your child to have better memory, better keep your child on that white liquid for as long as possible, because milk does help!
Its medically proven.

I have a few friends whose kids are in Primary 3 and are still on milk bottle. Did I criticize them?
Of ‘cos not!

I just kept quiet and smile.
That’s my style.
When I disagree, I usually shut my mouth.
Especially when it comes to parenting.

Every parent has his or her own parenting style, what works for one child, might not work for another.
Therefore, to me, it is pointless to try to inject your parenting beliefs into others when they did not ask you for your opinion.

So, this post is for people who want to wean their children off from the milk bottle and get them onto the cup.

Ok, here goes.
It started with a terrible accident. Read Post “2 months in and counting“. That gave me a kickstart.
However, I am NOT suggesting that your child should have such an awful experience in order to introduce the weaning process! *laugh*

The weaning started in mid 2009, when Keatkeat was 5 years old and Binbin was 4 years old.

They showed signs that they were ready to try new things. Keatkeat had a more difficult time switching over than his younger brother; but thanks to peer pressure, he pressed on.

So the weaning from bottle to cup journey truly began when one of the bottle teat broke and none of them wanted a taste of the other’s saliva…
PLUS
my deliberate forgetfulness in buying a new milk bottle teat made them stay on straws for a really long time.

Here’s how it started:
Drinking from the bottle without the teat, but from straws.

***Photo was taken on 4th November 2009

The key point in weaning a child off anything should NOT be too drastic, unlike how we did for the pacifier. It was snipped and end of story. Oh well, that’s another story altogether.

Ok, back to weaning from bottle to cup.
From the photo above, you can see that they still get to SUCK the milk and they still get to SEE their milk bottle.

Sucking motion helps to clam a baby and it still has the same effect for toddlers and young children. So most parents failed to wean their kids off from the bottle is because the child is forced to stop sucking too sudden, too soon.

And being able to still SEE their milk bottle also satisfy their need for familiarity and security.

No sippy cups were used during this process of weaning from bottle to cup.

So what is the difference?
We started off by removing two factors only:-

No more lying down during milk time

No more drinking from milk bottle teat.

After several months, the milk bottles started to change colour and I took the opportunity to try to remove another factor.

I brought the boys to the basin and showed them a Washed bottle and asked, “Do you think the bottle is dirty?” Well, the colour of the bottle has definitely changed after so many months.

“Yes.” they said.

“Look at how Mummy wash it.” After a few seconds of washing the bottle, I asked again, “Is it cleaner?”

They could Not see any difference in the colour and agreed that it was still dirty.

Me: “What makes the bottle dirty?”

The boys: “Germs.”

Me: “So after washing and the bottle still looks dirty, what does it mean?

The boys: “Still got Germs.”

Me: “When I pour milk inside the bottle for you to drink, what will you be drinking?”

The boys: “Germs.”

(Well, that was what I remembered. All that they said back then was “Germs, germs, germs.” *laugh*)

Me: “Do you want to drink germs?”

The boys: “No!”

Me: “So can Mummy give you a nice nice cup for your milk?”

Keatkeat had a new cup for his birthday back then. A birthday present from his cousin and so he used that.
However, Binbin preferred to personalise his own cup, so we gave him a totally white-coloured cup and coloured markers for him to start his artwork on the porcelain piece.

Now that Keatkeat is 8 years old and Binbin is going to be 7 years old at the end of March this year, they are still using the same cups.

We change the straws when their interior start to appear slightly cloudy, usually about 3 weeks or so.

***Photo was taken yesterday

I am PERFECTLY FINE with them drinking from straws. I have no intention of going further than where this weaning-from-bottle-to-cup journey is at now.

To me, so long as they stick to the routine of having a cup of milk at the beginning and at the end of each day, I am as happy as a lark. *Grin*

Remember, when your child is NOT ready for a change, DO NOT force it. Go with the flow…

Refusal today, does not mean refusal tomorrow. When your child is ready, he or she will show. Just keep trying… *smile*

Let’s be honest.

We love our children. However, despite so much love for them, there are always some imperfection which give us ‘sore eyes‘.

But the question is, “Do you see the ‘Good’ in every ‘Bad’ that you see in your child?”

I had mentioned in this post “Appetite Stimulant For Your Child?” that I am unhappy with the rate Keatkeat is growing physically. I just measured my two boys’ height again. Being 18months apart, their height difference is only 2cm now. *pout*

The bad I see:

Keatkeat is upset, when people ask me, “Are they twins?”

Keatkeat is sad, when people ask, “Which one is GorGor?” (elder brother)

Keatkeat is angry, when people point at Binbin and say, “Are you Gorgor?”

Keatkeat is unhappy to be in the front row for 3 consecutive years in Primary school.

I kept telling him, “Eat more, jump more and stay happy. Eventually you will grow taller, MUCH taller than Binbin. But most importantly, you must be healthy.”

Well, he did all of that. He ate more. He jumped around and stayed happy, but this formula does not seem to be working.

Then I learned from my sister’s MIL that if I want my boys to shoot up in height, I should try her formula; and looking at her 3 tall boys, I think its worth the try. *wink*

She said, “Buy peanut roots. Put it in water with spare ribs. Boil it. Let the children drink them as soup. BUT the most important point to note is, only let them drink it during their PUBERTY period. Not earlier, nor later.”

Alright, puberty period eh? Hhhmmm….4 more years to go… I can wait. So in the meantime, Keatkeat would need to bear with the comments from others.

Because he is unhappy with his height, I am upset too and over time, I start to see it as a flaw and could not find any good in his small built, until last week….

Keatkeat was in a great mood that day when we fetched Binbin home from school. He said to his younger brother, “Binbin, you are tired after school, I ‘ko-ko-meh’ you (piggy back), you want?”

And he piggy back-ed the younger brother WITH HIS SCHOOL BAG as well! *faint*

We decided to take the heavy school bag away and then Binbin wanted to try to piggy back his elder brother. And they kept interchanging. *laugh*

I was too late to take out my camera phone to capture the moment when Keatkeat lifted Binbin first and could only start capturing when Keatkeat was on Binbin’s back.

What a waste! I was amazed at Keatkeat’s strength! With the weight of Binbin AND the weight of the school bag all on his tiny back. *jaws dropped*

Finally! I see the ‘GOOD’ in Keatkeat’s small size: So that they could piggy back each other! *laugh*

If Keatkeat’s built was the same as his peers, they would not have enjoyed this moment:

End of Co-Sleeping Days
When it comes to kids, “Go With The Flow” is my motto. When kids are not ready for the next step in their lives, parents should not force.

Its the same for weaning. Do it gradually. Do it when your child shows signs that he or she is ready for the change. If not, never force for convenience sake. Unless circumstances do not allow excess time for procrastination.

One year ago, my boys have been asking, “Mummy, when can I have my own bed?”

They had been sleeping on the floor all these years. Not literally of ‘cos!

They do not have their own beds, just mattresses on the floor. When their mattresses are placed on the floor beside our queen size bed, that is exactly the length of my room. So there are no inches left for any bed frames to fit into my room.

Thus I often reply, “Wait till Ah Yee gets married and moves out, then the two of you can put your beds in her big room.”

And so they waited.

Waited for the marriage proposal…
Waited for the confirmation of the wedding date…
Waited for the preparation days…
Waited for the final day…

Their many waits were over by 6th December 2011.

Keatkeat wanted to sleep in my sister’s room that very night she got married, but everyone was too tired to shift the furniture in her room when we reached home at 1:00am plus after the wedding dinner; so Keatkeat had to wait for another day.

7th December morning, we started to shift the furniture in my sis’s ex-room, but there was little we could do because most of her things were still intact. We just managed to shift enough for Keatkeat to move his mattress over to sleep on the floor.

The boys and I had a pact.
When they have their own room, I will stop sitting beside them and watch them enter into dreamland every night. Instead, I will hug and kiss them, tuck them in bed, say “Good Night” and leave them alone in the room.

Binbin was not as ready as his elder brother, so he continued to sleep in my room, while Keatkeat slept in his new room, which is big enough to fit almost 4 queen size beds, all by himself. *Grin*

Binbin still prefers to have me beside him, watching him falls asleep slowly… One hand and one leg on me, hugging me like a bolster….

So how was Keatkeat first night?

A little afraid.
So I took out my Little Twin Stars night light from my Little Twin Stars collectible box and ‘lend‘ it to him.
After that, he fell asleep on his own without any issue. *Thumbs Up*

8th December morning, Keatkeat told me that he had good dreams throughout the night. One of it was with his Ah Yee. Guessed he misses her dearly… Then he said to his younger brother, “Binbin, you should sleep in this room if you want to have good dreams. This room gives you good dreams.”

Oh man! It worked!

Binbin made a decision there and then to sleep in their playroom cum bedroom that night.

So how was Binbin’s first night? PERFECT with the night light switched on.

9th December night.
Binbin refused to sleep and said he wanted me to lie beside him in the new room. I reminded him of our agreement. Expecting him to rebut me with his usual lengthy reasoning, instead he walked back into the room and fell asleep in less than 10mins. *Thumbs Up* Aaawww… my boy has really grown up….

There after, my 6 year old and 8 year old had been enjoying their room. They play there, sleep there, quarrel there, make up there… it IS their all in one room.

Though my Little Twin Stars night light is still needed to give Binbin that extra sense of security, I am happy that they are finally able to fall asleep without the need for me to be beside them.

*Thumbs Up*

Now, the next challenge would be the beds, which are coming this Saturday. Will they wake up in the middle of the night with their faces flat on the floor? *Shrugged*

We will find out after Saturday…

*fingers crossed*
