Worksheets vs Playtime

Child, Parenting, Preschool, School-study

Happy New Year, Everyone! May this year brings us lots of happiness, health and wealth!

For the kids, today marks the end of the school holidays, its getting ready to go back to the classrooms again.

As Keatkeat will be learning how to tell the time in this year’s Kindergarten 1, I thought I might as well train him to tell the time as he looks forward to his favourite cartoons. In this way, there is a fixed time for TV enjoyment and the empty time slots will be for worksheets, meals and playing with the love-of-his-life : Cars.

Luckily the duration of each cartoon is only half-an-hour, so there is plenty of breaks to rest those beautiful eyes.

“I’m sorry Binbin, you will need to play less this year now.

In order to help your brother to strike a balance between study and play, you will need to make some sacrifice, afterall you need to get yourself geared up for school too starting 2009, right?”

There is one thing that I could never tolerate….parents who forcus too much on academic of the child and neglect the child’s need for relaxation!

These parents just could not see that when the child’s mind is less pressurized, he learns better and faster!

Striking a balance is so important, but to them, their kids must be ranked the top 3 in class or score above 95 for every subject! My question to such parents are, were you that good in your time? If no, then what makes you think that your ‘less intelligent genes’ did not pass down to your child? His your child isn’t he?

Every person have his own limitation, don’t overstretch it, know the limits, find out the limits! Every day its the same routine : school, meal, worksheets and worksheets and worksheets before sleep. Its ridiculous!

So many parents have forgotten that they had been treated in this way by their own parents when they were young and they hated it! Yet now they are doing the same thing or worse, to their own children. *sigh*

Are you such a parent? or are you a parent that believes in giving your child a balance in work and play?

Back to School

Child, Parenting, Preschool, School-study

Keatkeat ended his nursery class. In this new year, my big boy is in Kindergarten 1. According to the teacher, there will be some big changes. They are required to learn to read 4 selected books all by themselves by the end of May!

How times have changed?! I remember I was almost 7 years old before I could do that! Kids are learning so much more, even for Keatkeat’s age of 4, as compared to our times.

The teacher continues to scare the kids by saying that there will be more homework in K1 as compared to Nursery, so be prepared to study, study and study….awwww…so boring! There should always be a balance in everything, shouldn’t it? Kids are kids, they still need time to play, don’t they. My heart-aches for the children of today’s world.

Is your child facing some sort of stress from school? I can totally understand that, man!
