Being a woman in Singapore, joining the military force is optional. In fact, it is rare to see a female voluntarily walk up to register herself into the army. Though it is rare, I am lucky to have a female friend who showed interest and was inside the army, going through the strenuous military exercises, tactical rifle scopes and stress. To her, it was all worthwhile so long as she could get herself tan and muscular.
