Its been days since China Milk Scandal started. 2 hours ago :BEIJING (Reuters) – The number of Chinese infants taken to hospital after drinking tainted milk formula has leapt to nearly 13,000, while Premier Wen Jiabao sought to assure alarmed parents that culprit companies face harsh punishment.

The Health Ministry said the number of sick children had risen from a previously announced 6,244 children to 12,892 after drinking milk powder contaminated with melamine, an industrial chemical banned from foods. See full report here and other related reports here.

Yesterday I received sms(es) on my handphone saying this:

Please help to sms to the rest…Hi Friends, the following items have been recalled due to China’s milk situation. This is real. M&M’s, snickers, mento’s yogurt bottle, dove choc, oreo  water sticks, monmilk, dutch lady sterilized milk, wall’s all natural mango, mini poppers ice-cream, moo sandwich ice cream, mini cornetto and youcan ice cream.

We’ve been asked by AVA to remove them from our stores. If you have any of these items in your house, don’t eat.

Today (extracted from here) Singapore’s Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority, known as AVA, said samples of White Rabbit-brand Creamy Candy imported from China were contaminated with melamine, an industrial chemical that can cause kidney stones and lead to kidney failure.

Authorities on Friday suspended the sale and import of all Chinese milk and dairy products after finding melamine in samples of a Yili-brand yogurt bar and Dutch Lady-brand strawberry milk manufactured in China. The ban includes milk, ice cream, yogurt, chocolate, biscuits and candy, as well as any other products containing milk from China as an ingredient.

“Retailers and importers have been instructed to recall these products and withhold them from sale,” the AVA said in a statement. “Consumers who have bought the affected products are advised not to consume them.”

I grew up eating the White Rabbit-brand Creamy Candy. I love it and I still do. Snickers was my best mate during schooling times, it was my lunch for most of the days. There are so many Made-in-China milk products that are sold here in Singapore, this is going to be quite an impact… Guess for just-in-case reasons, I’ll better stop buying M&M’s for now. Its sad, cos’ its one of my daily ‘dose’ of chocolate….*sigh*
