The importance of money.
Child, Parenting, Preschool February 17th, 2008Remember I mentioned about how other mommies’ kids are handling their pocket money and the problems that come with it? I was determined NOT to let my kids walk in the same footsteps as them. So to start things off. We went to get this!
Its just a mini little ‘piggy-bank’ for my elder one, about the size of his hand. Its important to teach him to recognise the different denomination of money, but its even more important to teach him to have savings of his own. He is just unaware that Allan and I have already opened a bank account for all his Chinese New Year Hong Paos and whatever Hong Paos he receive on his birthdays one month after he was born.
He chose this himself, not because of the character – Tom and Jerry, but because it has a lock and a key in it. He asked me, “Mummy, got lock means bad people cannot take away my money right?” I just smile. He forgot that the bad people can take the whole thing away….*wink*
Anyhow, I gave him a 10cent coin to start off his journey to save. He was really excited and started to look at the ground as we walk back home. Why? He was looking for money on the ground. Silly? For others maybe. But my dear Keatkeat is a money magnet. It amazes me every-time he spots coins on the ground whenever we are out of the house.
Its true. His eyes are so ‘coin sensitive’ or maybe because of his height, its easier for him to spot things on the ground. *Shrug*
I told him that when the container is full, he can use all the money to buy whatever he wants. Now that he is so eager to get the container filled up, Allan reminded him, “Keatkeat, you can take any money you found on the floor. But when you find money on the floor of anyone’s house, you must NEVER pick it up and treat it as yours. The money belongs to the people staying in that house.”
Then Allan started to give him all sorts of scenarios to make sure that he really got the point and you bet, my clever boy understood right away. So good luck Keatkeat!
When did you teach your child to save money?
