Chipped….Chipped Off

Breastfeeding, Child, Health, Toddler

I’ve mentioned over here and here before that Binbin has a head that’s as hard as steel and his pain tolerance level is extremely high.

He can bang his head onto the sides of the opened car door, ended up with a dent on his forehead and all he did was shed a few tears.

Now I got to know my boy a little deeper…he doesn’t only have a head so hard, he had such strong teeth too!

When I saw the tile, I was expecting blood with 1 or 2 broken teeth, but there wasn’t. Binbin just sat there looking stunned, that’s all….Should I credit this to 6 months of breastfeeding for such strong teeth and bones? Hmmm….what about his threshold of pain? Is that inherited from someone….way back to my ancestors…cos’ neither Allan nor I are as ‘tolerant’ as my 3 year old? Hmmm….*Scratch head*

West Coast Park

Child, Places Kids Love

This happened on Sunday, 25th May 2008. To mark the start of the 1 month school holidays, my MIL initiated something out of the ordinary-routine-family-gathering-at-her-house-on-EVERY-Sunday : Picnic at West Coast Park.

I love having picnic with my MIL. She often dished out yummies you seldom see on normal picnics. She is a talented cook. Without any hint, you could give her any dish, all she needs to do is take one bite and she could cook the exact same (or even tastier) dish without knowing the recipe.

Hence, it isn’t surprising at all to see long queues in front of her hawker stall all the time during her almost 30 years of hawker life.

I missed those days when I help her out at her stall, oooohhhh I was only Allan’s girlfriend then, not even fiancée yet…it was fun to serve non-stop till all the food was gone…only then the sore from shoulders to toes start to sink in.

Ache and pain were at every joint….but there I was back again, weekend after weekend…longing to have pain fun again.

So this time she prepared yao-mei-fan (Cantonese Language) - its rice steamed with chicken, pork strips, salted fish and preserved pork (larp-chiog). There was fried vermicelli too. Not forgetting the picnic-must-have - Sandwiches. There were sardines sandwiches and egg mayo sandwiches. Last but not least - Fruits: Juicy pineapples, sweet honeydews and tempting grapes.

It’s really a treasure to have 3 generations going out together, breathing fresh air, having fun and building a closer bond. This definitely beats staying in the four-walls on every Sunday.

Sentosa

Child, Places Kids Love

This post will be a less-word, more-photos post, simply because I WAS NOT THERE….*wink*

These beautiful pictures of fun were taken by my sister and her boyfriend at Sentosa, Singapore’s one-and-only fun-filled island, when they gave me my me-time on last saturday.

Kids’ very first Cable Car Ride:

Water Fun:

LugeRide (their main purpose of going Sentosa):

Skyride:

Other Shots of Joy:

Although Sentosa Island is only 500-hectare in size, to fully enjoy the place you really need 2 days, from morning till night….I’m glad all 4 of them had a great time even though they spent only about 4 hours there, it’s the companions that matter, afterall, isn’t it?

Have you heard?

Baby

This happened on Sunday, German police have taken a 7 month baby away from a German couple in Bavaria who are under investigation after putting their child for sale on Internet auction site Ebay!

The baby boy was put on sale on last Tuesday at a starting price of one euro (2.14 Singapore Dollars) and was withdrawn from the site around two and a half hours later. There had been no offers. (Seriously, who would dare to offer?)

You can find out how much is one euro in your Country’s Currency.

(The explaination was ridiculous) The mother said it was meant as a joke but police failed to see the funny side (neither do I).

The baby boy is in temporary good hands now while his parents are detained for ‘attempted child trafficking’.

Oh boy! What a joke that I couldn’t laugh about!

Kids Think Glasses Make Others Look Smart & Honest

Child, Health

When I read the article today from HealthDay News, I was reminded of the biggest regret I ever had.

That was exactly what went through my mind when I was 7 years old. Glasses will make me look smarter! I did EVERYTHING that could possibly cause myopia to stay with me. Indeed, my effort was rewarded. Silly me. I regretted it so so soooooooo much now.

I had my very first pair of glasses at 8 years old. At that young age, my myopia was 300 for each eye. Now, its 950 on the left and 900 on the right. You could say - I’m almost blind.

Below are parts of the article…..

FRIDAY, May 23 (HealthDay News) — Children think other youngsters who wear glasses look smarter and are more honest than those who don’t wear glasses, according to a U.S. study of 80 children.

In addition, the researchers found that children tend not to judge peers who wear glasses in terms of appearance, potential as a playmate, or likely athletic abilities……

…..”If the impression of looking smarter will appeal to a child, I would use that information and tell the child it is based on research. Most kids getting glasses for the first time are sensitive about how they’re going to look. Some kids simply refuse to wear glasses, because they think they’ll look ugly,” Walline said.

The study included 42 girls and 38 boys, aged 6 to 10. Of those, 30 wore glasses, 34 had at least one sibling with glasses, and almost two-thirds had at least one parent who wore glasses. The study participants were shown 24 pairs of pictures of children. The children in each pair of pictures differed by gender and ethnicity, and each pair of pictures included one child with glasses and one child without glasses.

The children were asked a series of questions about each pair of photos. About two-thirds said children wearing glasses looked smarter than those without glasses, and 57 percent said children wearing glasses looked more honest.

The results suggest the media portrayals that associate glasses with intelligence may be reinforcing a stereotype that even young children accept, Walline said.

The children’s answers to other questions about who they’d rather play with, who looked better at sports, who looked more shy, and who was better looking weren’t consistent enough for the researchers to derive any solid conclusions…..

….”The concern about attractiveness with glasses seems to be more internal to a particular child rather than an indicator of how they’ll feel about other people who wear glasses,” Walline said.

The study was published in the May issue of Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics. For full article, click here.

Help needed from Mommies in Singapore

Baby, Pregnant

As you know from my previous post, my friend just gave birth yesterday. She had arranged for a post-natal masseuse but this masseuse backed-out last minute.

She needs to find a replacement now. Any of you know of any post-natal masseuses? Doesn’t matter if its a Malay or Chinese. My friend is a Chinese.

Could you please email the post-natal masseuse’s name and contact number to angeline@allaboutyourchild.com ?

Thank you so much! That’s the Singaporean spirit right? Always ready to help? *wink*

Congratulations

Baby

My dear friend from secondary school, Xiuyan gave birth to her second daughter yesterday. It was a smooth delivery. Awww…what could be better than that ya?!

It was her hubby, Allan (same name as my hubby but very different in character), who broke the news to me.

Me: So what’s the baby’s name?

A: Haven’t choose the Chinese name yet, but I’ve got a meaningful English name for her….I don’t know how to pronounce. It’s spelled as P-H-E-D-R-E.

Me: Why choose a name that even the father can’t pronounce?

A: Not that I can’t pronounce, it sound something like PRE-DER or PRE-DAY.

Me: Hmmm….(doubting)…so what does it mean?

A: I forgot.

Me: HUH?!

————————————————————————–

So I did a search on Google and Yahoo for the name and found the answer from here .

Phedre is a girl’s name, originated from Greek. It means ‘the bright one’. Other names carrying the same meanings include Phedra and Phaidra.

From this other site, I found the pronunciation to be FEH-druh.

Those Greek names can be a real challenge sometimes, especially when it comes to pronouncing them.

Singapore Arts Festival 2008

Child

This beautiful picture is from Singapore Arts Festival Website.

It was a last minute decision to attend the grand opening of the yearly Singapore Arts Festival yesterday. We saw the news at 6.30pm last evening. There were shots of its rehearsal…then….my boys shouted in unison “FIREWORKS!!!”

Yes they love fireworks. Immediately we jumped onto our feet, bathed the 2 of them and rushed down to Boat Quay (hopefully) before it starts at 8pm. With all the expected peak hour traffic jam, we were lucky to reach there in time.

There were at least 4-5 rows of people, crowding around the perimeter of the Singapore River, with their kids sitting on their shoulders, waiting patiently for the ‘WaterFools’ (theme of this year’s grand opening event) performance to start.

We couldn’t see anything till we climbed on top of the ledge of the OUB Building gripping tightly onto the pole with my left hand while my right was holding onto Keatkeat’s hand.

The width of the ledge was only half the size of my foot, I was a little jerky. Although I could see the ‘fools’ floating on the water quite well after that, it was quite scary to be 1.5m taller all of a sudden.

Allan sacrifices himself by being the ’safety guard’. He stood in front of the kids, so as to prevent the kids from falling forward. He did not get to see anything except the Fireworks in the sky. That’s father’s love, ya?!

It was really amusing to see mini-floats with trees and cars floating on the water as the ‘clowns’ performed on them. It was a pity, I could not capture any photos because both my hands were occupied.

Anyhow, I’m glad we went, the kids was chatting about the multiple colors flashing in the sky as we leave the place….as parents…we know its all worth it when we could put a smile on their faces.

——————————————————————————-

As I’m typing now, my kids are on their way to Sentosa, Singapore’s very own mini-fun filled island. Hopefully my sister, their ‘occasional nanny’, brings back lots of photographs to share….

So I am enjoying every second, spending time with just me, myself and I! I hardly get such privilege, you know…..*wink*. Hope you have a great Saturday too! Cheers!
