China milk scandal

Health

Its been days since China Milk Scandal started. 2 hours ago :BEIJING (Reuters) – The number of Chinese infants taken to hospital after drinking tainted milk formula has leapt to nearly 13,000, while Premier Wen Jiabao sought to assure alarmed parents that culprit companies face harsh punishment.

The Health Ministry said the number of sick children had risen from a previously announced 6,244 children to 12,892 after drinking milk powder contaminated with melamine, an industrial chemical banned from foods. See full report here and other related reports here.

Yesterday I received sms(es) on my handphone saying this:

Please help to sms to the rest…Hi Friends, the following items have been recalled due to China’s milk situation. This is real. M&M’s, snickers, mento’s yogurt bottle, dove choc, oreo  water sticks, monmilk, dutch lady sterilized milk, wall’s all natural mango, mini poppers ice-cream, moo sandwich ice cream, mini cornetto and youcan ice cream.

We’ve been asked by AVA to remove them from our stores. If you have any of these items in your house, don’t eat.

Today (extracted from here) Singapore’s Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority, known as AVA, said samples of White Rabbit-brand Creamy Candy imported from China were contaminated with melamine, an industrial chemical that can cause kidney stones and lead to kidney failure.

Authorities on Friday suspended the sale and import of all Chinese milk and dairy products after finding melamine in samples of a Yili-brand yogurt bar and Dutch Lady-brand strawberry milk manufactured in China. The ban includes milk, ice cream, yogurt, chocolate, biscuits and candy, as well as any other products containing milk from China as an ingredient.

“Retailers and importers have been instructed to recall these products and withhold them from sale,” the AVA said in a statement. “Consumers who have bought the affected products are advised not to consume them.”

I grew up eating the White Rabbit-brand Creamy Candy. I love it and I still do. Snickers was my best mate during schooling times, it was my lunch for most of the days. There are so many Made-in-China milk products that are sold here in Singapore, this is going to be quite an impact… Guess for just-in-case reasons, I’ll better stop buying M&M’s for now. Its sad, cos’ its one of my daily ‘dose’ of chocolate….*sigh*

In June 1997.

2. In which month and year did you two officially starting dating?
February 1998.

3. Where was the first dating place the two of you went to?
Singapore Changi Airport

4. What was the most touching thing he did to you when you two were still dating?
He bought ‘glow-in-the-dark’ sticky-plastic-stars and moon, came to my house and stick it on my bedroom ceiling. I love to look at stars, so he wanted them to keep me company while I sleep.

5. How about after your marriage?
He made a cup of ice-milo for me (without me knowing) and boy was I feeling thirsty that night, at that very moment. – I’m so easy to please eh? Hmmmm….

6. Share your lowest period of your life with him.
When my mom decides to choose gambling instead of my sis and I. She left us, left the house and find her own shelter somewhere else.

7. Share your happiest moment with him.
When I was pregnant.

8. Share your saddest moment with him.
When my friend lost our wedding VCD. Even though we did ask my friend to pay for the replacement VCD, but it was almost a year before I knew she lost it and the worst part was -it was I who called her to return the VCD to me. If I hadn’t call her, I don’t know when will she tell me that its lost. And the worst part was, after one year, the original v-tape has gone mouldy and even we have re-burnt into the new VCD, the images were blurr and ‘jerky’….

9. Share your angriest moment with him.
when the surprise present I wanted for Valentine’s Day turned out to be ‘NO PRESENTS AT ALL’. Go read that post if you are keen to find out what happened. *Urrrrggghhh*

10. Share your funniest moment with him.
Hmmm… for this one, I think its the funniest, sweetest and most painful moment (what a mix feeling!). Almost 2years after we were married, I was deep in my sleep. Suddenly I was woken by a sharp pain. I woke up and saw Allan’s hand gripping so darn hard on my right lower arm. His short nails were almost piercing through my skin. I shook him and questioned, “What’s wrong?!” He was WOKE UP!!! He was asleep when he did that! Then he told me, “So scary! I dreamt that I was in the hospital looking all over for you. The doctors told me you were dead and they REFUSED to let me see you. I was so scared, so angry, so sad….” Then he hugged me and said, “Don’t ever leave me ok?”

11. Share your most frustrated moment with him.
When we had to borrow $ from my friends and loved ones for survival. I hate borrowing $, ‘cos I don’t want to be anything near my mom. But I still did it. So I was struggling like hell, inside me.

12. Lastly, when was the last time you two hold hands and walk under the moonlight, like how you used to do?
Last Saturday when we were at Labrador Park….but not exactly ‘like we used to’, the ‘holding period’ is way shorter than before we were married.

I would love to hear the ‘lovey-dovey’ stories of Sandra, Tina and Tammy
