Kids’ Talk 6 – Ne-Ne-Pok
kids talk October 5th, 2009Keatkeat: “Mommy, why do we have ne-ne-pok (nipple/breast)?”
Me: “So that Mommy can feed you milk when you were a baby.”
Keatkeat: “Then why do I and BinBin and Papa have ne-ne-pok too?”
Me: “Hmm… good question…”
Keatkeat: “So you don’t know the answer right? Go check the Internet! But if they don’t have the answer then nevermind.”
There I was, feeding my own curiosity too and typing “Why do men have breast/nipples”… and here’s the answer:
“The answer is that as embryos men and women have similar tissues and body parts. If anything the embryo follows a ‘female template’. That is why nipples are present in both sexes. It is the effect of the genes, the Y chromosome and the hormone testosterone that brings about the changes and masculinises the embryo. Testosterone promotes the growth of the penis and testicles. Because nipples are there before this process begins the nipples stay!
Nipples and breast tissue have no function as such except for perhaps protecting the heart and lungs from injury.”
Hey parents, don’t you just love being a parent? It ‘forces’ you to increase your knowledge!!! *wink*

Children are asking the very difficult questions nowadays. My son also has been asking the same..so just nice you had the answer, i will try to decipher how to explain in simple words..haha.

i bought some books in kinokuniya that explains interesting but useless facts. “why do men hv nipples” is the title. hahahaha!!!

Hey I learnt something from your post as well! Being a parent does force us to be more up to date with GK. Kyle has been bombarding me lately with lots of whys for everything…got to start doing some research too :)
