Children’s World of Simplicity
Parenting July 7th, 2010
To me, children’s world is everything about simplicity. Pure fun and honesty surrounds every corner. What is secret? To them at this age, below 6, all that they know is sharing the great news.
Things which made them happy. Events which made them angry. Experiences which caused a tear in their eye. They let it all out in words. To them keeping a secret is as good as going against every cell in their body.
You ask them to keep a secret, they ask “WHY?”
Which in fact, is a fantastic question!!!
It was Allan’s birthday few months back. He happily ran to his Papa and said, “I made a card for you and hide it in your laptop.” *faint*
Me: “Shhhh… Binbin, its supposed to be a surprise.”
Binbin: “But Papa would be happier to know it now, right? Don’t need to wait till he go home then know mah.”
Yesterday, Binbin did it again.
Binbin: “Ah Yee (my younger sis), we bought a cake for you already.”
Me: “Shhhh…. Binbin!”
My Sis: “What did you say Binbin?” (even though it was obvious that she heard it, but she just played along. *laugh*)
Binbin got the clue and left the room in silence.
It made me think. Why am I trying to teach my children? To suppress their excitement? To prevent them from making another person happy, by spreading the good news? Why don’t I just let them say what they want to say?
What if they learned the wrong message that ‘not all things need to be said’? *pout* That would be the last thing I want. I want them to continue the way they share their little daily ups and downs with me. Every little thoughts that go into their head, they express explicitly.
I want things to stay this way…… come to think of it, “Surprise” is not such a big thing afterall. In fact, sometimes it could be a big disappointment. *Wink*
