Tests for Primary One
School-study February 26th, 2010None of my nieces had tests during Primary One. Even though there were mock tests, none of the results from the mock tests were taken into consideration at the year end examination. But not Keatkeat’s school.
Keatkeat’s school which was my Primary School too, decided to initiate a new system of assessment. Its back to the good old days. *wink*
Seriously, it does not matter to me, but what nudged me to write this post was the CHINESE TESTS AND MATHS TESTS both fall on the SAME DAY! *faint*
Man! Keatkeat’s stress level rose when he marked it down on his calendar. “Huh? 2 Tests on the same day? Then no time to play!” was his immediate response.
A little update on his progress. His Maths is Awesome so long as he stops being over-confident of himself and starts making silly mistakes. How silly are his mistakes? Here is an example:
He did all the sums right, but he copied the letters wrongly! *faint*
Silly Enough? No? Look at the next one:-
He forgot to write the letter “m” for monkeys and “b” for bananas!!! *Double faint*
And that was how he could not get Full Marks for his maths exercises. What a waste! *pout*
So 11th March is the ‘deadly day’. Both Maths and Chinese Test. I call these two subjects his “A” subjects. Why? Well, his Maths is Awesome and his Chinese is Awful!
His Chinese is so bad that his dad is seriously considering to get him into a tuition center. *eyes rolled* To me, nahhh…. its expected and I can accept that fact, but not his beloved Papa.
Oh well, we shall see his performance after the Tests on 11th March first, before his Papa takes any actions.

Hi Angeline,
Very unusual for a school to have 2 tests in a day…this will really stress out both the child & parents. Becos parents also need time to revise the work with them.
All the best to KeatKeat’s test and then will be a one week good holiday break for him.

Strange to have 2 formal tests on the same day. You may want to check with the teachers?
All the best to Keatkeat for his tests!!! :)

We seldom have 2 tests on the same day at our school also. We only have SA’s as have done away with CAs.

its definately a first for me to see 2 tests on the same day! can try talking to the teacher? :P
I send my kids to Chinese enrichment class as I can’t coach them very well in this area. Its very important to have good fountation or else, the kids will suffer when they goes to P3 when they need to write chinese compo.

Two tests on same day is def not fair to the kids.
btw, as a chinese teacher, my advice in improving chinese is to read more chinese books. start with simple books with keat, read to him before bedtime, then slowly let him read on his own. very important, else he will struggle as he needs to write composition. reading is very important in improving langauge. :) jiayou!

Seeing the mistakes Keat did made me recalled the countless ones I made and drove my mom nuts back then haha. I guess we all make silly mistakes but most important learn from them ya. =)
Do you communicate with the boys in mandarin? This will help lots and I agree with kkf reading builds the interest in a language.

Rach,
I did a post over here http://allaboutyourchild.com/parenting/saturday-is-speak-mandarin-day about how we try to ‘balance’ the language speaking at home. Its true that my emphasis is still on English because its the language used for EVERY OTHER SUBJECTS! *wink* From Maths to Science to Future Geography and History…. :)

Yes, it’s really a waste when they do silly mistakes. Coz they really know the answer, but jes copied wrongly, missed out an alphabet, etc. And becoz of the silly mistake, they dun get any marks. My girl jes had her “assessments”. 2 subjs per day, for 2 days. Hopefully for exams, they won’t cramp everything up.

my view is good language foundation starts from young. so it might be a good idea to send KK for extra lessons.
